I have the ability to upgrade to pro tools 10 for free because I bought a student pro tools 9 upgrade from pro tools 8 (same for any type of student purchase of pro tools 9). However, I read some reviews and learned what the upgrades and additions are, and some of them sound really cool (regions become clips and you can adjust the volume of each clip/region, add plugins, etc. separately without need for automation), not necessities for me, but would be cool to have. Also, if I don't upgrade now for free, there will probably come a time when they are no longer offering free upgrades for those who bought pro tools 9 at a student price, then I would have to pay the full upgrade price.
